Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a strategy for the development of the Arctic zone of Russia and ensuring national security until 2035, the corresponding decree was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

The Russian government must approve a plan for the implementation of the foundations of state policy and strategy in three months. The government is also instructed to monitor the implementation of the strategy and annually report this to the president.

The decree notes that in the Arctic zone, Russia produces more than 80% of natural gas and more than 17% of oil, and the continental shelf in the Arctic contains more than 85.1 trillion cubic meters of gas and 17.3 billion tons of oil.

The document says that investment projects in the Arctic should push the production of science-intensive and high-tech Russian products.

The decree also notes hazardous working conditions in the Arctic, low transport accessibility, the absence of an emergency evacuation system and medical assistance, a high proportion of harmful diesel energy, the risk of harmful and toxic substances from abroad and "the growth of conflict potential, requiring a constant increase in the combat capabilities of groups troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation "and other troops in the region.
